Water-Saving Fixtures: Toilets

Water-saving toilets are more common in households than ever before. Toilets are no longer using the 13-20 litres per flush as they did in the late 1990’s. Today, there is a large selection of high-efficiency toilets (HET), dual flush toilets and water-saving plumbing options to meet building codes and reduce household water waste. Did you know? Making the change from a 13-litre toilet to a 4.8- litre water-efficient toilet can save up to 41 litres per user per day! But that’s just one route. Here are the options to consider:

Toilets have been engineered to be more efficient, quieter and conserve water.

Low-Flush

Older toilets commonly used 7 gallons per flush (gpf)/15 litres per flush (lpf). New regulations require newly installed toilets to use no more than 1.6 gpf/6 lpf. In older homes, it’s wise to change the toilets to low-flush models to see significant savings in the volume of water and comply with modern standards

Dual-Flush

If you already have a low-flow toilet you can still cut down on water usage by installing a dual-flush that gives you a choice: push one button for flushing liquid waste (around 0.8 gpf/3.02 lpf) and another for solid waste (1.6 gpf/6.0 lpf or less).

It is not that easy to make the right choice.
